CUSTOMIZED LEMOND FLAGSHIP
1998 Lemond Zurich
I’ve had this Lemond Zurich for over 5 years, which is actually a long time for me. It’s seen numerous configurations—different components, wheelsets, paint— but I’ve finally built it to “dream bike” status.
First was new paint. Lemonds from its era were notorious for iffy paint quality; mine was pretty scratched up when I got it. I had the frame powder coated in Signal Red (so not technically paint) and painted the carbon fiber fork to match.
Next was new graphics. Let’s just say the original decals didn’t age well. Being a graphic designer by affliction, I worked up custom branding. I was inspired by Greg Lemond’s time on the La Vie Claire cycling team in the 80’s and came up with a design that calls to the team logo’s typography. I wanted the graphics to be minimal, however, so I outlined the letters. I also created custom Reynolds 853 and USA Made badges that match the aesthetic.
The final touch was the component group. I knew it would have to be a Campagnolo all-silver build to give it a classic look with modern function. It’s a mix of Athena, Centaur, and Record that’s configured 2x11. It’s a wide and low setup (compact 50-34 chainrings with a 11-32 cassette), because I’m not getting any younger. The other pieces are favorites: Prologo saddle and bar tape, SOMA Hwy One bar, Continental Grand Prix 5000 tires.
So when it comes to a dream bike, the question I ask myself is “what would I change?” As configured, nothing. I’m a huge Greg Lemond fan, whose exploits cemented my love for cycling. I’ve wanted an 853 frameset since they were introduced. The Campagnolo components are both state-of-the-art (for mechanical/rim brake) and classic. The all-silver build is timeless. And the ride is the most fun of any bike I’ve had.
