PEUGEOT COMMUTER
1984 Peugeot UO-14
I built this bike to handle my daily commute and around-town utility duties. It’s seen a few build permutations, but I think it’ll stay in this state for a while. This latest build started with the Stronglight crankset off my Raleigh Grand Sports. I already had the Mafac Racer brakes, so installing as many French components on a French frameset was a no-brainer. I originally had a 27-inch Atom hub-based wheelset, but the rear axle was bent (I did keep the quick-release skewers). I turned to Japan for the rest of the build; I had a bunch of Shimano parts lying around.
Gear-changing duties are handled by Z408 friction shifters driving a 600 “Tricolor” front and 105 rear derailleur. A Sunrace freewheel and KMC chain round out the drivetrain. The original Peugeot stem, Nitto Dove handlebar, and Tektro city brake levers make up the controls. A Bernard Hinault-model Selle Italia Turbo saddle sits on a Kalloy seatpost. I couldn’t find a French saddle in my price range, so I settled for one honoring a French rider.
Commuter-friendly components include the Sunlite stainless steel fenders, Electra rear rack, and Crane Karen bell. An REI laptop pannier goes on the rack, holding my computer and lunch. Not carrying a backpack goes a long way to making the ride less sweaty.
I appreciate the practical nature of this build: low maintenance, capable for everyday use, stable, and durable. Combined with some French savoir-faire, it’s a fun and reliable bike in the stable.
